Attract More Patients to Your Health Practice by Choosing a Niche to Work In
Posted by este in Business, Solo Professionals on September 19, 2011
One of the best ways to start getting more patients through your door is to focus on working with a smaller portion of your community. This probably sounds strange to you; after all by working with a smaller section of people, you have less people who could come and see you. Luckily, it doesn’t work like that. When we talk about serving a smaller group of people, we are really talking about establishing a “niche” for you to work with.
So why is it good to work in a specific “niche”?
Well, the best way to grow any business is to provide a specific answer to a particular problem or “pain” that a potential customer has (or patient in our case). By narrowing down your focus you can provide a much more specific answer to these “pains”. For example, it is much easier to help a tennis player with a shoulder problem if you can demonstrate that you are experienced in treating tennis injuries.
Perhaps the main benefit of this is that from now on you get to work with your favourite types of patient! This is because you are obviously going to choose a “niche” that you enjoy working with. If you love treating sports people, or teenagers, or dancers, or office workers – you get to work with these people day in, day out.
Yes, it will take some time to get this far, but the first step is identifying the people you are drawn to serve and then dedicating yourself to letting them know how you can help them.
In my coaching practice, I call this work “finding your perfect patient”. Those patients that you do your best work with, that really “get” what you do and generally respond well to your treatments – these are your perfect patients.
How do you go about finding this out?
Take a pen and a piece of paper and let your imagination roam free. Write down the types of people you most enjoy working with.
What age are they, what jobs do they do and what do they enjoy doing in their spare time? Are they married or single? Do they have children at school, or are they grandparents?
The trick here is to full in as much detail as possible, to get a real glimpse of the type of patient you would like to work with.
An example of a finished “perfect patient profile” may be as follows: A male 32 year-old marketing consultant, who is engaged to be married. He enjoys playing tennis and golf in his spare time and loves weekends away hiking in nature with his fiancee. He reads business magazines, Men’s Health, and novels by great modern American writers. He jogs, goes to the gym and is interested in his own health and fitness.
As you can see, once you have done this then you have a framework to work with. All your marketing efforts should be directed at attracting just this sort of patient to your practice. Now you can write articles with him in mind, you can design your website with him in mind. You also know where to find him – sports clubs, gyms, business networking events and similar. Again this gives you a head start in your marketing efforts.
Once you have completed your own profile then you can congratulate yourself – you have successfully started the journey towards choosing a “niche” of patients that you will really enjoy spending your working life with.
